Microsoft, Confused?

I have been watching Microsoft transform slowly over a number of years, going through many transformations in the name of progress. However, my question is, how does this all fit together?
Although I am a true Microsoft user, I feel that at the moment, the delivery of Microsoft's services are getting very convoluted and confused. I think this is due in part to Microsoft's size, diversity and methodology.
The other day I set about trying to understand what has happened with Microsoft and why everything seems to have slowed down since the release of Phone7.

The main biting point I could find in the current slowdown of MS is the tablet form factor. Apple have re-invented the wheel once again with the iPad, convincing everyone that they need such a pointless device. This has now created an expectation in the market for an equivalent Microsoft device. The issue with this is that currently, Microsoft have no operating system available for such a form factor and from what I can find, no actual vision of what such a device should look like, work like or 'do'. Windows doesn't natively support touch and Microsoft don't think the Phone7 OS would suit a device of that size. I agree with them.

Around the time of the iPad, Microsoft actually already had a device that was pretty much ready for market. The Courier. From what I saw of this device, it actually looked really cool. The concept was less of a tablet, than a replacement for a paper notebook, with a lot of added functionality. courier
I think this device would fit a lot better into my lifestyle than the iPad. For me, if I want to portably browse the internet I already have a laptop or phone, having a third device that is a direct mix of phone and laptop just seems pointless. But check out how this courier works and tell me what you think of the concept…

VIDEO

However, The bad news if you liked this, is that Microsoft have totally scrapped the courier to work on their workflow model.
The issue Microsoft is having is what I would class as a methodology problem; they may allow for innovation, they may even break a few boundaries in the process. But just before something goes to market they get cold feet and pull out. Or constantly change the direction of the product; worried that it will be another Vista, or another DX10.
There is a history of bureaucracy in Redmond, The Conservative streak runs through their design process.
The initial idea that Microsoft present to the world is a phantasmagorical utopian future view that inspires and captivates. But because of constant changes and getting beaten to market by younger, faster companies, with slicker hipper designs, they just never seem to get it quite right. Then, because of their initial promises, people see them as 'shit' when they don't deliver 100%.

"Why the hell are you using microsoft products then?" you may ask…

I know that last bit may have seemed like I was knocking Microsoft, a company that I have backed so many times, in so many articles. But it's not. I do like what Microsoft have done, especially in recent years. They really pulled one out of the bag with Windows 7, I love using it. I also think Phone 7 is great. My HD7 is a fantastic phone.

The problem here is that the stuff Microsoft releases has no product unity. Honestly, their system is very confusing for first time users or infrequent visitors to the world of tech. I'm not talking about the individual operating systems of the various platforms, what I am talking about is the user's integration with the modern methods of communication.
HD7
It's not that they aren't there. It's that they seem to be split into about a million different services with a million different names and methods.

From my point of view, this level of integration is not necessary; I am very web 2.0. I use what I want, require limited interconnectivity of devices and services, and don't like my computer doing things for me unless I tell it to. But that's me, I am technical and don't really care about people who are too incompetent to use a mouse.

ms confused To clarify what I mean, say for instance I wanted a free email account through Microsoft. How would I choose to do it? Will I get a live.com account, which provides you with a live ID that also accesses all of the other services Microsoft offer through MSDN or MSN 'Live' messenger. Or should I get a Hotmail account which does the exact same thing. Bing is the search engine but if you want you can also use the search on microsoft's news network, or XBOX 'live', However, if you're feeling fruity you can visit Microsoft.com and be confused by all the many links to their various different products, services, and networks. What I am saying is that they need to
desperately get some unity going or people aren't going to have a fucking clue what the hell is going on … I already don't and I think they're great. They also need to clarify what this word 'live' means. What is more or less 'live' about one product or another? What would make messenger 'live' but not word 2010? Why is xbox 'live' when 'live' is already an email service?

How I would change the way MS do things?

Glad you asked. I would instantly go about integrating their entire web service with windows. I would get one form of media delivery and device sync for windows, phone and any other form factor. Either Media centre, Media player, or Zune. I would probably buy VLC and keep their dev team and make everything media related work from a single place integrated with the shell. I would make Microsoft.com a proper sales portal with clear and decisive information linking you in a logical and well laid out way to all of the various networks.

I would make the products clear and defined and would probably scrap the word 'live' entirely, or tell everyone that 'live' in a product name means that it's only for 'l33t h4xx0rs'. I think this issue is very small in the grand scheme, it won't stop me from using Microsoft products or the PC form factor. I do like the freedom I gain. I don't require things to be polished and presented to use them, retards do though, and 80% of the computer using world are retards. I just think Windows, Phone etc just need to be de-bulked and de-confuzzled. If people had this unity I think they would get on with windows a bit better and be able to do all of those things that are already there in windows but just need to be laid out better. Regarding the tablet. I would just overhaul the courier concept. Maybe make it a bit more flexible to be capable of expansion when people actually know what the fuck they want a tablet to do. Windows is already great. I would just have a more interactive help system for morons. A more lead by the hand approach to wizards (optional of course). Rather than keeping the population stupid. Actually try and teach them rather than just doing it all for them. If you remove people's ability to troubleshoot and have an understanding of a system (*cough, cough OSX) You make them stupid. Too stupid to be able to work stuff out for themselves or understand how the jigsaw fits. Microsoft are 90% of the way there. They just need to perfect their delivery.

You do of course realize that the Courier was never a product. It was a concept animation... nothing more.
I'm sorry, but your grasp of the tech industry is woefully inadequate.

I think you'll find it was a proper device that was almost ready for market, as I said. That is according to various sources, not just me, look it up. I didn't just imagine it. I get alerts about this sort of stuff and read it. Now although it might be fun trolling this site, you are really wasting your own time. Your opinion of this site, or me doesn't change anything, cus that's all it is, your opinion. As demonstrated by 'Macsucksballs' people like this site. you don't happen to and that's great, but you are clearly just here to try and start an argument. why bother. and be careful when you read these articles and attempt to attribute everything to me, cus I don't write all the articles. You do get that this article wasn't about the courier right? and if the only thing you are trying to debate is how close the courier was to completion that really is irrelevant. This article isn't about the courier really, it just gives it a mention as an example.

I'm not trolling. I am interested in reasoned discussion. Something you are apparently not in the slightest (as indicated by your editing of my post to include a childish, homophobic errata).

I was simply pointing out one glaring error in your reasoning. If that simple fact (which is NOT in question. Microsoft themselves admitted the Courier video was nothing more than a concept and I know someone on the UX team that worked on it) eludes you, it is a good indicator of the level of your understanding of the industry.

The conceit of yours is to assume that I don't own or use Windows. I build my own machines all the time. I have 2 brand new Win7 boxes right next to me now. I also use Macs. I find both OSs to be useable... but I prefer the Mac

You simply can't accept that others don't share your opinions. You knock the PowerPC as used by idiots, ignoring the fact that is was used in the XBox for years.

It all adds up to childish behavior.

Ok, lets get this sorted. Firstly, I am more than happy to 'debate' with you, The reason I put debate in quotemarks is because from my 4 years of doing this, practically no debate with anyone has really sorted anything out in my mind, all it is is someone telling me stuff i disagree with and me refuting the same stuff over and over again.

My editing of you post was a laugh, get over it.

There is no glaring error, if anything, if you honestly think it's incorrect, there is a slight error in one sentance. But I still maintain I researched this article and read that this was a year from release and then got pulled. whether this is true or not isn't really relevant to this article, that isn't what the article is about.
Also, knowing someone that made a video doesn't make you privy to top level microsoft information, so get over yourself.

I didn't assume that you didn't use windows at all, I can't find anywhere where I'm calling you a mac fanboy or anything. Honestly I don't care which platform you use or prefer, not my business. also not my job to tell you what you prefer.

I am more than happy, and I've said this hundreds of times, for anyone to have any opinion they want. But not when that opinion is making rash judgements about me for one website with some fun and swearing. I know me, and trust me, this isn't that serious. In fact, all of this content in ages old and is getting updated as soon as I finish the new build. Most of these articles are getting scrapped in favour of a more technologically oriented, less opinion driven content (Not that this is to say it's all opinion, it isn't).

Now, on to powerPC. That fun little banner that scrolls along the top is basically not important to content, there are no articles related to them. My offhand comment about them being used by idiots is there purely to piss mac users off, I don't profess to giving a shit if you think that's childish or not.
I don't use consoles, so the Xbox means very little to me, slag it off, don't slag it off, I am of no opinion what-so-ever.

call me childish, call me ill informed, this doesn't matter, I think personally you have missed the whole point, especially the part of the site that says "we do not strive for an equal and balanced opinion" for instance.
Or all of the countless times I have told people that I don't really care if they disagree with me, this site is basically here for me to rant and rave. nothing special. Ergo, update in a month or so that has better articles (that weren't written up to 4 years ago). I am also integrating a references section into the base of all articles so I can cite reference sources.

But this is all in fact irrelevant. You disagreeing with me, debating with me or attempting to belittle me or my opinion is pointless, I like debate, but not with someone who can't accept others don't share their opinions. What you are doing is identical to what I am apparently accused of in the court of you.
You can say that you reckon my "grasp of the tech industry is inadequate" but that is your opinion. nothing more. you know absolutely nothing about me, past some ranty articles on a website at least.

We've never met. Get off your high horse you fucking bighead.

if you are after reasoned discussion, go to a more appropriate site. the name of this site is WE HATE MACS, not WE HAVE A BALANCED OPINION, the clue is in the fucking name. I don't say anywhere on this site anything about having a balanced opinion. and if you wanted debate, why did you think reasoned debate would come in the form of a website that has fuck written all over it. litterally.

I'm sure you want to say something else though, so I will leave it open for you to say whatver it is you want.

iPad didn't "re- invent the wheel" by any stretch of the imagination. They have had OQO model 1s and model 2s out WAY before the ipad. Not to mention XP tablet edition that's been around forever. In fact, I've had a school issued HP tablet running XP for 2 years now. iPad is garbage any way. Most Android tablets absolutely destroy the iPad in performance, hardware specs, and capabilities.

I'm in total agreement. They lack focus as of late and MS seems to get their hands into everything without allowing themselves to see what direction they should go. The whole tablet situation is quite fustrating and MS's lack of their own version screams out loud that they don't see this device has any valid future. They created the tablet concept for god sake! why don't they have the courier?!? Possibly it's because they see the limits of this type of device and it isn't very MS to limit any of their products. Frankly the courier concept would work just fine as an overlay to windows itself similar to what media center does or what surface offers. Zune should become intergrated with windows and media player just makes the eco system redundant. The live brand has it's place but should also replace the other redundant services like MSN and hotmail.

Totally, I think they don't have the courier because it would just further confuse the situation. I assume that the amount they have to spend supporting even a failed device is substantial. I don't think in the current economic climate any companies are taking risks.
However, what you generally find with MS is that they recycle stuff that they have found out in these discontinued projects. We may find that the work flow model for the courier is carried in one form or another to whatever tablet device they release.
Whatever happens, I think it's quite good of them to be cautious, if they go in, all guns blazing without a battleplan. it's just another vista for apple fanboys to shout out on cue.
I just wish MS would hurry up and show me something.
